The major Bitrix Site Manager v6.5 features include:

Web 2.0

The new version of Bitrix Site Manager now implements technologies which make building Web 2.0 sites a breeze:

  • Tag cloud;
  • Web services (SOAP);
  • Customizable interface;
  • AJAX in Control Panel;
  • AJAX in the public section;
  • Forum and blog communities.

Tag Cloud

The new implementation of the Search module now features fully functional indexation technology which is able to index and search all the site documents by tags. Essentially, indexation is performed not only by text but only by tags if they exist. A tag cloud here acts as a point of access to the search engine to find content by tags.

Tag Cloud
A Tag Cloud

Version 6.5 can display search tags on static pages, in information blocks (news, catalogs, articles, photos, files etc.), in forums and blogs. For example, when adding news or any other information block element, you can specify tags in a special form.

According to the search regulations, indexation is performed with respect to the access permissions and the information origin (static files, forums, blogs, information blocks). In other words, users can search only private news blocks, or build a tag cloud for a private forum.

Tags can be sorted alphabetically or by popularity. You can specify the number of tags in a cloud. The selection period can be specified to select documents for, say, 30 days, and build a tag cloud only for these documents.

Web Services

Version 6.5 contains a new Web Service module included in the Professional and Enterprise editions. The module serves to help developers create new or integrate existing web services.

To illustrate how web services can be used, Bitrix Site Manager is equipped with a sample web service for the Web Analytics module. This simple web service sends the site statistics summary to a caller. Windows Vista users can install a small gadget to show the site statistics obtained via the sample web service. The gadget is included in the system installation.

This module can be especially useful for integration with applications that already exist in a company information environment, or external solutions.

Site Configuration Wizards

The site creation and configuration wizards are special user interface solutions with a series of steps that a user performs to configure Bitrix Site Manager according to the required tasks.

Site Configuration Wizard

The site configuration wizard is launched immediately after the server-side installation completes, allowing to prepare the site for publication. Users can choose the layout, design, colors; specify initial data such as company name, contacts, logo etc.

The e-Store configuration wizard allows to configure the invoice templates, stamp images, payment systems, delivery services.

Gradual Update System

The new version of Bitrix Site Manager implements a gradual model of system update.

In version 6.0, the update process was performed within a single step and was only able to limit the server-side script execution time at certain hosting services. The new update system works fine with all sites, even those where the script execution time is strictly limited. Besides that, the update system performance has been seriously optimized and the user interface improved.

All existing users shall update the update system and only then install new module versions.

All users of previous versions whose technical support subscription is valid can update their systems to version 6.5 free of charge.

Information Blocks Import and Export

All editions of Bitrix Site Manager – even the Start edition – feature a powerful import and export of information block contents. Version 6.5 extends import and export still further and allows to copy properties and values (e.g. images) in addition to the information block contents.

Importing an Information Block

The export and import procedures have been developed thoroughly with users' requirements for large data amount and frequent updates in mind. All operations are performed in a stepwise fashion. For example, the system not only imports data gradually, but even parses large XML files chunk by chunk. Essentially, this means that the amount of data to be imported is unlimited. System restrictions for the script execution time and available memory have been the major stumbling block for importing large files. Now the problem has gone.

Since the catalog is usually updated extremely frequently, the data import procedure is intelligent: it calculates the element CRC and compares it to a value stored in an XML file. Actual import will take place if only data has changed. Undoubtedly, this will save resources considerably if a large catalog is a subject of frequent update.

Usage of the new import and export engines is not constrained to uploading and updating catalogs. Users can export the information block structure (properties, values and descriptions) to XML. For example, when moving content from one site to another, you can export a whole information block to XML, and then import it and have the required information block and element properties created, data uploaded. This feature is extremely useful for developers because information blocks are the main information repository in most projects.

Delivery Service Automation

Version 6.5 extends the e-Store functions even further. All payment systems have been updated.

Version 6.5 implements automatic delivery service handlers supporting a wide range of services (UPS, DHL, AmEx etc.) The delivery cost is calculated automatically using the service-provided fees.

Delivery Service Settings

Extensions to Access Permission Policy

Access permission assignment system is empowered with a concept of access and action levels. An access level comprises a set of allowed actions (e.g. file creation permission; user management permission etc.) and it can be attached to a module or a user group.

For example, the "Manage users of allowed groups" option permits non-administrators manage users who are members of specified groups. The "Limited PHP code editing" option permits non-administrators configure the component parameters and edit PHP files in the visual editor.

Quoting Disk Space for Project

In version 6.5, an administrator can impose restrictions for database and disk space usage (otherwise known as quota). The system kernel and cache is not quoted. This feature can be useful for hosting projects.

Custom Properties

Developers can now create their own custom properties for use with information blocks, forums, blogs or users. Custom properties can be easily displayed in the public section. For example, developers can add new fields to the site user profile. Public components of all affected modules now support custom properties.
